Discord takes security seriously. They say themselves that Discord security is "a primary focus". When you're chatting with your online friends and playing games, you don't want to have to think about how to keep yourself safe. Today we'll learn all about what Discord does to ensure your safety while using its service, as well as some great general security tips.

Your IP is Safe

Discord uses a Client-Server architecture within its communication platforms, meaning that your IP address is concealed from those that you're talking to. Additionally, images and links are proxied, which also keeps your IP secure. That also means that you're protected from DDOS attacks. From then on, if you try to sign in on a different IP address, you will be sent a verification email so you can confirm that it's really you logging in.

Two-Factor Authentication

2FA is an optional security feature that can be enabled for maximum safety. The name explains it all; you have to use two methods of confirmation in order to log in. Discord asks you to confirm your sign-in by entering a code sent to your phone or another device. It is best practice for server owners to require moderators to use two-factor authentication. This will prevent someone from getting into their permission-enabled account and messing up the server.

Hidden Information in Streamer Mode

Discord knows when you're using a service like OBS or XSplit, and will automatically hide certain aspects of the Discord interface, including your email, Discord username, and so on. For streamers that don't have this information available to the public, this is an essential security feature that will keep their information safe.

File Safety

Since you can upload and share files in Discord channels, they have also added a warning when downloading .exe or .zip files that could be used to harm your computer. Additionally, it scans uploaded files for viruses, just for an extra layer of safety. You can be fairly confident when downloading a shared file from Discord, but always exercise caution and use your judgement.

Discord Doesn't Share Your Information

Third-party advertisers get your information through many websites, such as Facebook and Google. Discord states that your information is not sold to advertisers, and there are no ads on the platform. Nothing more to say there!

Never Share Your Password

This applies to Discord security as well as any other service, whether it be Steam, Facebook, or Gmail. No employee of those services will ever ask you for your password or other sensitive account information. Again, use your best judgment when these situations come up and don't hesitate to report someone who is trying to scam people out of their account information. Don't hesitate to update your password if you think your account has been compromised.

General Tips for a Good Password

Regardless of the website or program, there are a few basic tenants for creating a good password.

  • A minimum of 8 characters, preferably more than 10
  • A mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters
  • A mixture of letters, numbers, and special characters (such as punctuation marks)
  • Avoid dictionary words or names - this includes your own name
  • If you do want to use a word or phrase, replace letters with symbols and/or capital letters
  • Don't use birthdays, addresses, family/pet names, or personal identifying information
  • Avoid starting with a capital letter
  • Avoid ending with a number
  • Don't write down your password anywhere
  • Don't use the same password on multiple websites

With all of this in mind, it seems like an impossible task to make passwords for every website and actually remember them. Luckily, there are plenty of password storage and encryption services out there. These services can keep your passwords safe and keep them different across all of your accounts.
